With the title Lyric Technology, Groombridge asks us to understand ‘lyric’ with poetic implications rather than musical and ‘technology’ it its literal sense—as a collection of techniques, methods, or processes in order to accomplish an objective. As with other works in the artist’s practice, this work demonstrates the “invention” of a cool, reductive vocabulary of form in the expression of an idiosyncratic phenomenon. Here, the form: circles or disks; the expression: a rotation in white space. Together, they continue the artist’s highly measured investigation into epistemological concerns which are characterized by deceptive simplicity of form and economy of materials.
