Beth Stuart (b. 1979) picks up on overlooked historical moments, characters and material techniques to create alternative plot points in the narrative of modernist abstraction, examining the physical and metaphysical implications of dissolving the figure-ground relationship. Recent material research has convened bizarre Victorian bathing customs, interstitial meiofauna, the politics of stretch, time travel, melting rock with her bare hands, pizza, and contemporary art as a site of ritual sublimation. She holds an MFA from the University of Guelph, a BFA from Concordia University and is Assistant Professor in Visual Arts at the University of Victoria. She has exhibited at The Power Plant, Toronto; Esker Foundation, Calgary; Galerie de l’UQAM, Montréal; and Oakville Galleries, Oakville. In 2023 Stuart completed a major sculpture commission titled Les Tendresses for the Banque Nationale headquarters in Montréal.
